Males vs. Females:
When asked which rat is preferable over the other, I'd say it comes down to personal preference. I could cuddle up with our boys forever but, be amused for hours on end by the girls.
Males tend to be larger and lazier than females. We like to refer to them as "lap dogs", as they are most likely to lounge around with you and snuggle up. "Squishy" is another term used by most everyone in the rat world to describe the males. The scent of a male rat is a slightly earthy musk but, not strong or unpleasant. A male or female rat who "stink" live in a cage that is not cleaned thoroughly or often enough. A slightly more frequent cage cleaning would combat the male scent perfectly! Both male and female rats are prone to territorial marking, but males do mark a bit more. Hammocks, pouches, a warm lap and a shoulder ride make for very happy boys.
Female rats are usually a bit smaller in size and much more active. A female will want to explore and demands variety in her activity. They are more likely to learn to do tricks then males. The scent of a female is slightly more mild than a male but proper cage hygiene is still required. A favorite of a female is the exercise wheel. This helps her exert her natural excess energy.
Many rat lovers eventually end up with both so that they can have the best of both worlds... in separate cages of course!!
